Thank you to APE Equipment for sponsoring these counts!
There will be some giveaways at each count with things like gators and tarps as well as WSSBC swag. APE makes amazing quality stuff, and is right here in BC! Check them out at https://apeequipmentgear.com/
We will be conducting the 1st of 3 Fraser Sheep Counts Saturday May 31. Feel free to come the day of but we will look to be leaving the campsite by 7am so I will begin assigning areas at about 630am fyi. We will be camping at the Brigham Rec Site. It's a free site and according to the internet there might be water nearby, but we recommend bringing what you need just in case the spring isn't flowing or is contaminated.
Our lead organizer will be there Thursday or Friday evening at the latest and departing Sunday morning, everyone is welcome to join him for some evening festivities and campfire stories. He will have maps for everyone to take as well as data sheets to record your findings. Our goal is to count the number of ewes and the number of lambs. We are monitoring the lamb retention numbers essentially and looking to build a ewe to lamb ratio that we will compare from all 3 counts. It would be greatly appreciated if people can take some photos while out counting if your comfortable with us using them for social media purposes to advertise the next 2 sheep counts.
Directions to Bringham are as follows:
From Hwy 97 Northbound just north of Lac La Hache, turn West onto the Enterprise Road (dirt road), follow Enterprise Road past the major power lines to the junction (T intersection) with (Upper) Dog Creek Road, then turn right on (Upper) Dog Creek Road, travel approximately 2km, Rec site is on the left. Map attached and GPS Co-ords of the campsite entrance are: 51.62247, -122.04627
This is going off of google earth so we are not sure if the road signs at dog
creek say upper or not which is why it is in brackets. We recommend fueling up your vehicle in Lac La Hache or 100 Mile House just to be safe as some of the area's we need to count are a bit away from the campsite.
What to bring: In case you're new to a sheep count
Camping Equipment if that's your plan
Warm clothes, expect cool temps at night and in the morning, layering is essential as it will hopefully get during the day hopefully while counting and camping, plan to do a bit of hiking so make sure you have your boots!
Binoculars are a must
Spotting scopes really can help with sheep identification but not mandatory
Backpack for lunch and water
Chair for camp or to use for glassing if you have a packable one
Hat
Don't forget the bug dope and sunscreen!
Description of site:
Two large open grassy areas with several designated camping spots, so whether you are going to tent it or bring something else you should be comfortable.
Lastly:
We have put together an amazing prize package for 1 lucky volunteer that consists of a Yeti cooler, a premium hunting pack and something from Sitka as well as WSSBC swag and a few other goodies. All attendees will get 1 entry into the draw each time they attend any of the sheep counts, so the more you attend the more chances you have to win. The following 2 sheep counts will be July 12 and Aug 9 at the same location, so I hope to see some of you there. The draw will take place at the final count in August and you don't need to be in attendance to win!
If you need to reach the lead organizer once out there you can text his satellite communicator: 1-902-700-7630
Looking forward to seeing everyone there, it's going to be a great time!
