Wild Sheep Counts

Fraser River Sheep Counts – Hosted by WSSBC

This year’s Fraser sheep counts will focus on the Junction area, just south and west of Sheep Creek Bridge. At the Province’s request, the Wild Sheep Society will conduct surveys in this area, where winter treatment was recently carried out to eradicate Movi in local herds. The counts are expected to provide biologists with valuable feedback on the effectiveness of that treatment. As the Wild Sheep Society has also invested in this program, these surveys represent an incredible opportunity to support ongoing science and research and to follow through on the commitments our members have made to wild sheep population management.

 

To confirm, the dates for the counts this year are: June 13, July 11, and August 8. We will meet up at the McIntyre Lake Rec Site ideally the day before and we ask that you arrive at least the morning of the count no later than 7:30 AM.

 

Directions: Drive approximately 8.5 km west after you cross the Sheep Creek Bridge on Hwy 20, just past the Brake Check on the highway. Turn North on the Chilcotin Meldrum Road and proceed along that road about a kilometer to where you will see Wild Sheep Society signs and meet up with the rest of the group. We are planning to kick off at about 8AM on the Saturday, once we assigned count areas and locations to the group. After the count is done for the day, we will reconvene at the Rec Site to collect the data and have a fun evening recounting sheep stories over a fire (as restrictions allow) and a BBQ. 

 

Please sign up before if you're able as this will allow the organizers to better plan for the counts. WSS branded gear will be given away at the events as a thank you to the participants. Each participant will have their name entered for each count they attend for a grand prize draw to win a Schnee's GC for a pair of boots at the conclusion of the counts.
